GS Alumna Nancy Lynn '96 has worked to better increase fundraising for Alzheimer's research as executive vice president of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. 

Six Columbia University student and alumni veterans will ring the NASDAQ closing bell on July 3 at 1 p.m. ET.

Three GS students are currently spending their summers in Asia as part of the inaugural Global Scholars Program Summer Research Workshop, which seeks to immerse students in field research opportunities in a comparative, cross-cultural environment.

The School of General Studies celebrated Class Day on Sunday, May 13. Nearly 1,800 guests, many using umbrellas provided by the University to shield themselves from the bright sunlight illuminating Low Plaza, gathered to celebrate the 365 graduates of the Class of 2012, which ranges in age from 21 to 64 years old. Hailing from more than 39 countries, international students and new Americans comprise 25 percent of the graduating class.

Over 160 GS alumni and guests gathered on campus June 1–2 to celebrate Alumni Reunion Weekend and Dean’s Day alongside alumni from Columbia College, Engineering and Barnard College.

In 1992, Gac Filipaj, 52, left his parents and siblings behind and escaped from war-torn Yugoslavia to come to the United States.  He arrived knowing no English and with virtually no support system. Twenty years later, Filipaj, a Columbia University custodian, will graduate from Columbia University School of General Studies with a B.A. in classics with department honors on May 13 at 9 a.m. in New York City.  

On Monday, April 30, 2012, the GS alumni community celebrated the Class of 2012 at a reception at the restaurant Havana Central. Over 110 students and alumni attended to celebrate the upcoming graduation and network with the GS community.

Dean of the Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) Peter J. Awn announced that U.S. Army General George W. Casey, Jr. will be an honorary guest at Class Day on Sunday, May 13. Casey will be present to celebrate the 41 U.S. military veterans graduating from GS this year—the largest number of undergraduate veterans to graduate from Columbia University since the period following World War II.

Professor John Horgan ’82, ’83JRN, Head of Science Writings at the Stevens Institute of Technology, presents his investigation of the role of anthropology, sociology, and human psychology in an effort to attain world peace in his new book The End of War.

Chad Miller '07 starred in the film An Ordinary Family, which tells the story of a man attending an annual family reunion near Austin with his partner.

Jacqueline Wayans '08 will publish her first children's book Ambrose this spring. In her retelling of the story of Eden, she explores creation, love, and, ultimately, the devastating result a poor choice can bring. 

Christopher Riano '07 will return to the Columbia classroom this fall to teach Constitutional Law through the Lens of Higher Education.
