On Thursday, February 10, Dean Peter J. Awn and co-chairperson of the Recent Alumni Leadership Committee (RALC) Richie Space ’05 hosted a reception for 2001–2010 alumni from the School of General Studies at Brasserie 8½ in Midtown Manhattan.

On Monday, December 6, Dean Peter J. Awn hosted the School of General Studies Annual Fund Holiday Party at Landmarc at the Time Warner Center. The party, attended by more than 110 guests, celebrated the leadership of alumni and friends who support the School of General Studies' Annual Fund initiatives.

Now in its 55th year, the Postbac Premed Program is the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States. And now more than ever—as American medicine undergoes a sea-change, and experts debate the very nature of medical training—those graduates are poised to make a powerful contribution to American health care, and to the communities they will one day serve.

In 2008 Commander Joel Newman '76GS learned that he had been selected to receive an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary. The only hitch was that at the time of the ceremony, Newman, a chaplain for the U.S. Navy, would be with Marine Corps troops in Iraq, the latest in a series of deployments that includes stints in Somalia, Ecuador, Japan, the Arabian Gulf, and Afghanistan.

The Columbia University Postbac Premed Program and the Columbia University College Physicians and Surgeons have formed a new partnership through a linkage program agreement. This is the first and only linkage program agreement between the College and Physicians and Surgeons and a postbaccalaureate premedical program.  

School of General Studies Senior Class President Henry Wells and the GSSC hosted a breakfast for about 20 current students while GS alumni enjoyed the barbecue at Baker Field. The student-alumni contingent met at Wien Stadium and watched the Lions face off against Dartmouth.

Alumnus Larry J. Lawrence '69GS, '71BUS was one of ten Columbia University alumni honored at the Alumni Medalists Gala on October 16.

Alumnus Thomas Ikimi’s ’04 latest film, Legacy, will be released in select U.S. cities on October 15. In New York, the film will show at the AMC 25 on 42nd Street. Ikimi majored in literature-writing and wrote and directed Legacy, which was nominated for Best U.K. Feature at the Raindance Film Festival.

GS alumnus Menachem Kaiser '09 was recently awarded a Fulbright scholarship in the 2009-2010 competition.

More than 50 incoming students gathered in the GS Lounge during New Student Orientation to hear alumni share their GS experiences.

The School of General Studies celebrated the Class of 2010 at the Class Day and Commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 18, respectively.

More than 70 graduates celebrated the completion of the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program at Class Day on May 17, 2010 in Low Memorial Library Rotunda.
