On Wednesday, March 9, faculty, staff, friends, and family gathered at Columbia University's Presidential Ballroom in the Faculty House to celebrate the induction of 101 students into the School of General Studies Honor Society. The GS Honor Society was created in 1997 to recognize the exceptional academic achievements of GS students who have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.8 in more than 30 points of academic coursework at Columbia.

GS alumni who work in recruiting and hiring share the ways in which they have leveraged their nontraditional paths to thrive in the industry, and offered three pieces of advice for current GS students and recent graduates navigating the job market. 

Sara Wahedi ‘24GS is the co-founder and CEO of Ehtesab, a crowdsourcing app that gives residents of Kabul real-time updates on safety situations in the city. Sara has been recognized across the globe for her innovative work and shares her motivations behind creating Ehtesab, her goals for the app, and how she balances life as a student and CEO.

Lisa Cardoso ‘23GS, Kaya Kim ‘22GS, and Angie Maldonado ‘23GS are among only a handful of undergraduate recipients of the 2021-22 Columbia University Racial Justice Mini-Grants. The trio share the process behind successfully pitching their project, why they see art as critical to constructive conversations around racial justice, and what they hope to accomplish as their project becomes a reality.

More than a decade ago, Columbia University and Sciences Po pioneered the first of many Dual Degree Programs with a uniquely immersive approach to international education. Today, alumni of these programs are leveraging the skills and experiences they acquired to make their way in the world—and change it for the better.

Minori Ito ‘22GS signed with a modeling agency when she was 17 years old and attended Santa Monica Community College before coming to GS. Now, she balances her dual passion for modeling and studying economics—two worlds in which she hopes to make a difference.

Joseph Aimard '24GS is currently running a participatory photography program aimed at illuminating the experience of migrants in Paris. He shares insights into creating, getting funding for, and managing such an ambitious and meaningful endeavor.

This weekend, the Postbac Premed Student Council (PPSC) will kick off their annual Medical School Fair with over 20 medical schools and healthcare programs participating virtually.

On Monday, January 10, the School of General Studies welcomed 241 new students to the GS community with the Spring 2022 New Student Orientation Program. Parents and family members of the students were also invited to attend a half-day of virtual orientation programming, hosted by the GS Alumni Relations and Development team. 

Students applying for institutional financial aid for the 2022-2023 academic year are advised to submit all of the required forms as soon as possible, and no later than Friday, April 1.

Milwaukee native and Army veteran Paul Izard ‘22PBPM shares his experiences in the Postbac Premed Program and offers advice to his fellow GS Veterans. 

On Monday, January 10, the School of General Studies welcomed new students to the GS community with the Spring 2022 New Student Orientation Program (NSOP). 241 undergraduate and Postbac Premed students were invited to the online event to learn about their peers, the GS staff, and the abundant resources GS has to offer before jumping into the academic semester.

Evelin Collado '10GS was part of the New York City Council team behind Int. 1867, a law that went into effect this month giving 800,000 noncitizen permanent residents in New York City the right to vote in local elections.
