On Saturday, February 8, around 600 prospective medical students and 32 volunteers gathered in Lerner Hall for the 2020 Medical School Fair. Hosted by the Columbia University Premedical Association and the Columbia University Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program, the fair welcomed 162 representatives from medical, dental, veterinary, and allied health graduate schools.

“This year’s fair was the largest to date and we’re excited to see how our successors can continue to expand this event next year and for years to come,” said Paulina Rugart, co-organizer of the Medical School Fair (along with Subin Chung.)

Postbac Premed students and premedical undergraduates from Columbia University and Barnard College, as well as students from the City College of New York and other greater-NYC area schools, spoke with admissions representatives and attended various panels at the event.

Whether you’re interested in medicine or dentistry, schools in California or Florida, the Medical School Fair is the only opportunity to explore your choices with the deans of these programs all in one space.

At the Admissions Deans Panel, Columbia attendees picked up valuable advice from deans who were representing Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, University of Rochester Medical School, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Duke University Medical School.

The deans shared details about the application process, interview preparation, and other attributes they seek in applicants. Following the panel, all students in attendance were then invited to participate in various breakout sessions throughout the day.

This year, two breakout sessions were offered — AAMC Financing Medical Education, hosted by Julie Gilbert, the Senior Education Debt Management Specialist for AAMC and an Osteopathic Medicine Panel featuring panelists from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines University, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“Whether you’re interested in medicine or dentistry, schools in California or Florida, the Medical School Fair is the only opportunity to explore your choices with the deans of these programs all in one space” said Rugart.

Information about the 2021 Medical School Fair will be published on the GS website in the coming months.
