GS Student Life invites students to apply to serve as Orientation Leaders for the Fall 2021 New Student Orientation Program (NSOP).

Orientation Leader Responsibilities & Time Commitment:

  • Orientation Leaders will oversee a cohort of Incoming Students (OL Group.)
    • Send new students an Introduction e-mail, and highlight meetings through the week. (E-mail drafts will be shared with you.)
    • Offer a 1 on 1 meeting with each incoming student; Scheduled by Sunday, September 5.
  • Orientation Leaders will be assigned to a Crew of OL's with a Crew Captain as a mentor.
    • Attend a Crew Introduction meeting to occur before Orientation Week.
    • Crew Check In with Crew Captain during Orientation Week.
  • Orientation Leaders are required to attend all of the following programs:
    • Orientation Leader Training: Thursday, August 26, 1 - 5 p.m. ET & Friday, August 27, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET.
    • Orientation Week: Monday, August 30 - Sunday, September 5.
    • Mandatory Programs on Monday, August 30, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. ET. & Tuesday, August 31, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. ET.
    • GS Social Event on Tuesday, August 31, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
    • Joint Social Program on Wednesday, September 1, 6 - 11 p.m.
    • Joint Social Program on Thursday, September 2, 6 - 11 p.m.
    • Crew Captains will serve on-call shifts through the weekend.

Position Description 

  • Serve as a representative of the Columbia University School of General Studies.
  • Support GS staff to aid in the execution of Orientation events.
  • Foster a welcoming community by sharing experiences about GS and Columbia with incoming students.
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter for instances of sexual violence during the week of Orientation.
  • Work with a diverse team of student leaders.

Position Requirements 

  • Must be an enrolled General Studies student.
  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and a desire to work with incoming students.
