71 Students Inducted into GS Honor Society

As inductees, faculty, staff, friends, and family gathered virtually from all over the world to celebrate, Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch welcomed the attendees with opening remarks, making note of the close-knit community at GS that has thrived despite the challenging circumstances brought on by the pandemic. 

The GS Honor Society was created in 1997 to recognize the exceptional academic achievements of GS students who have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.8 in more than 30 points of academic coursework at Columbia. Following Dean Rosen-Metsch's welcoming remarks, Victoria Rosner, Dean of Academic Affairs, presented the Honor Society's newest members.

"Given the well-known rigor of the Columbia undergraduate curriculum, this achievement places these students at the very top of a student body that is already among the most elite in the world of university education. These students, that is to say, are the best of the best," Dean Rosner said.

She added, "These students are not everyone’s idea of 'typical American college students.' Many of them are international in their origins and global in their outlook. They have a maturity derived from life experiences including military service, travel, parenthood, career achievement, immigration, and artistic endeavors."

Among those inducted this spring were students enrolled in the School’s International Dual Degree Programs with List College of Jewish Theological Seminary, with Sciences Po in France, and with the City University of Hong Kong, as well as students from countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Morocco, Myanmar, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, the Dominican Republic, and the United Kingdom.

"You, among all the very talented students we have at the School of General Studies, are the community that makes clear GS is truly a beacon for the future of highly-selective higher education," Dean Rosen-Metsch said.

The chief aim of the GS Honor Society is to cultivate interaction among those committed to intellectual discovery and academic excellence. The only group of its kind at Columbia, the Society offers opportunities throughout the year for its student and alumni members to interact with one another, as well as with the faculty who enjoy working with such outstanding scholars.
