Position Description
A volunteer research assistant is needed to assist physicians with research projects taking place at NYU Grossman School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital Center Department of Pediatrics.

Projects involve improving communication with parents whose children are admitted to the hospital. These projects include examining parent understanding of instructions they receive when their children are discharged home from the hospital, as well as physician and parent communication during family-centered rounds. They focus on improving the way we communicate with patients and families who have limited health literacy and those who prefer to read and speak in languages other than English.

Responsibilities include:

  • Data collection
  • Enrollment of families
  • Performing parent interviews and administration of assessments
  • Observation of physician and parent communication during family-centered rounds
  • Maintenance of research data
  • Scoring of questionnaires and assessments
  • Data entry
  • Preparation of materials for assessments
  • Organizing study materials
  • Literature reviews

Position Requirements

  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • 18 years or older at the time of application
  • Vaccinated for both COVID-19 and influenza
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Prior research experience a plus

Time Commitment
Part time (8 hours per week, generally two in-person 4-hour shifts or one 8-hour shift per week, which are usually scheduled Mon. - Fri. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; evenings and weekends are not available); shifts would be consistent from week to week during a given semester but can change from semester to semester or over the summer; minimum commitment of one year
