Position Description
Dr. Yelena Akelina is seeking a research assistant for a 90 day observership position at the CUIMC Microsurgery Training & Research Laboratory. The lab teaches basic microvascular procedures to surgeons from all over the world in different specialties, emphasizing vascular anastomoses, interpositional vein grafts, and nerve repairs on live rat models. CUIMC will provide regulatory and skills training before the beginning of the observership. Volunteers will be able to practice the microsurgical suturing techniques taught in the Basic Microsurgery course during the 90 day volunteer position, as well as work on relevant clinical research projects when available. The position also provides a great opportunity to speak with a variety of surgeons every week from many different specialties and learn more about their career and pathway to medicine.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Animal handling of rodents (volunteers will undergo full ICM/IACUC training prior to commencing the observership)
  • Observing the teaching process of microsurgical courses
  • Learning how to set up the operating tables
  • Learning how to prep animals for surgery
  • Monitoring animal anesthesia
  • Observing and helping with day-to-day operation of the lab
  • Observing and communicating with surgical students in the course
  • Helping with administrative tasks

Time Commitment
Part-time (minimum two days per week)
