Position Description 
The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking volunteers for their Patient Transport and Navigation Program. 

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful interactions with patients and visitors, as well as enhance your communication skills. HSS volunteers are an integral part of their operations and play a huge part of shaping the experience for patients and visitors through outstanding service, timely communication and empathy.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Demonstrating accountability for healthcare customer service and professional behavior through personal work ethic, teamwork and effective communication skills.
  • Creating a welcoming environment by greeting all patients and visitors upon arrival.
  • Escorting and directing patients and/or families from/to their appointments
  • Providing wheelchair transport as needed
  • Greeting patients in a polite manner showcasing empathy and warmth.
  • Transporting all patients to the exact destination, on a timely basis, as instructed by supervisor.
  • Notifying person(s) receiving the patient of their arrival.
  • Communicating with various departments in order to cater to the patients’ needs.
  • Identifying, resolving or reporting patient issues to appropriate areas for prompt and effective resolution that can help elevate the service excellence standards of the hospitals.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of patient information at all times in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Providing general information about hospitals and their amenities as well as the neighborhood resources (food, transportation, accommodation, etc.).

Position Requirements: 

  • Computer literate including use of MS Office and other job-related applications.
  • Understand the need for confidentiality and ability to maintain such.
  • Must be able to walk for long distances.

Time Commitment
Part-time, 150 hours.
