Position Description
Dr. John Crary is seeking students to volunteer as assistants in the Neuropathology Brain Bank & Research CoRE at Mount Sinai. As a part of the Neuropathology Research Division Training Program (NeRD-TP), students will be trained to deploy approaches to diagnose and study brain diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Parkinson’s disease, COVID-19-related encephalopathy, etc.). Students will also gain exposure to challenges associated with treatment modalities, diagnosis, and research design. Students will have the opportunity to graduate from this program after one academic year and become paid research assistants.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting physicians and laboratory personnel in brain tissue dissection
  • Assisting in histological processing of specimens
  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the brain bank
  • Interfacing with neuropathologists and research scientists
  • Presenting a neuropathology case work-up at the end of the academic year
  • Opportunity to contribute to an ongoing research project

Position Requirements

  • Strong academic performance (3.3 GPA minimum, must be listed on CV)
  • Must be current postbac, Masters, non-matriculated student, recent graduate, or career changer interested in the medical and/or research field
  • Prior exposure to neuroscience, psychology, pathology, or related disciplines (classes, volunteering, etc.)
  • Previous laboratory experience a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Intent to work in healthcare/research and/or matriculate into a related program
