Position Description
Fromer Eye Center, a busy MD/OD office, is seeking an ophthalmic technician to join their practice. The technician will perform various tasks during the care of their patients including but not limited to extensive data collection functions as delegated by the physician to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients in a way that instills confidence in the treatment.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Acquainting all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed
  • Informing patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests
  • Obtaining patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications
  • Mastering general ovular anatomy
  • Performing accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include A-scans and visual fields
  • Performing fundus photography, OCTs, ERGs, and UBMs
  • Performing cell count
  • Assessing of pupils, confrontation fields, and anterior chamber depth
  • Performing topography, BAT (brightness acuity test), CST (contrast sensitivity test), B Scans, applanation, pachymetry, and super pinhole
  • Sending prescriptions to pharmacy electronically
  • Using Tonopen
  • Neutralizing glasses prescription
  • Scribing/accurately documentating exam
  • Assisting in minor surgeries
  • Sterilizing instruments
  • Cleaning, stocking, and opening/closing of exam and work up rooms; maintaining clean work area and patient areas
  • Helping and answering questions of other staff members, as well as at the front desk as needed
  • Disposing and documenting of biohazard waste
  • Determining which patient should be next to be taken from the waiting room and to have testing initiated, and escorting all patients from the waiting room for the data collection; following testing, advising the patient as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during the wait
  • Maintaining a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required; communicating with coworkers to facilitate proper patient flow
  • Checking calibration of equipment and making adjustments or calls for service as necessary
  • Assisting with ordering and maintain proper inventory of all patient care supplies (bulbs, film, visual field paper, ARK paper, etc.)
