Position Description
Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Department of Medicine is seeking to hire a student for a summer research opportunity for the Echocardiographic Screening or Rheumatic Heart Disease in Nicaragua program.
The aim of this program in southwestern Nicaragua is to screen for rheumatic heart disease, determine its local community prevalence, and establish a longitudinal cohort to characterize clinical outcomes and identify cases likely to benefit from medical, surgical, and/or transcatheter therapy. Their team of local Nicaraguan echocardiographers use handheld echocardiography screenings to reach remote communities in the Rivas Department. Their team of local cardiologists, in partnership with personnel from the Columbia University Division of Cardiology, identifies individuals with rheumatic and other heart disease, and refers them for excellent specialty care and assistance in local public health efforts
Responsibilities include:
- Learning the fundamentals of screening echocardiography in this global health population
- Accompanying patients to cardiology clinic and procedures
- Analyzing data and writing for research publications
Position Requirements
- Proficiency in Spanish a plus
Time Commitment
Full-time, with a potential opportunity for students to travel to Rivas, Nicaragua for four to ten weeks over the summer (this is not a requirement of the position, and the department will work with the hired candidate to find summer stipends available through the university, medical school, or from external sources to fund the trip if desired); alternatively, this position may be a remote learning/research opportunity per availability
