Position Description
The Dermatologic Surgery Centers of Boston is looking for three gap year students who will be graduating from college this spring and are interested in gaining experience in a clinical medical setting before applying to medical school. Successful applicants will be trained as Surgical Technicians in this hands-on surgical opportunity. A specific interest in dermatology or surgery is not necessarily required, as this experience provides an introduction to medicine in general. The position will consist of 3 surgical/operating days and 2 clinical half-days. Technicians will be have the opportunity to take on direct surgical responsibilities, undergoing training by histotechnicians to prepare and cut tissue. Every month, Dr. Kovacs conducts clinical grand-rounds where gap-year students learn about clinical surgical dermatology, pathophysiology, and histology.
Responsibilities Include:
- Assisting Dr. Kovacs with Mohs surgery/tumor extirpation followed by facial reconstruction on surgical/operating days
- Assisting Dr. Kovacs in suture removals, office visits/consults, follow-ups from surgeries, excisions, and total body skin checks on half-days
- Taking vital signs and clinical histories, assisting with biopsies, bandaging patients immediately after surgery, and explaining wound care protocols
- Consulting patients about the Mohs procedure and scheduling their appointments
Position Requirements
- High motivation and willingness to learn the intricacies of sterile technique, strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Ability to commute between two offices in Brighton and Framingham
- Car highly recommended, but not absolutely necessary
Time Commitment
Full-time with one year commitment and a May/June 2024 start date
