Position Description
Dr. Christina Coyle, an expert in tropical medicine and the principal investigator on a grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control entitled, “Reducing the burden of neglected parasitic infections (NPIs) in the United States through evidence-based prevention and control activities,” is seeking a highly motivated clinical research assistant. Under the grant, Dr. Coyle plans to implement a hospital-wide outpatient Chagas disease screening program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine - Elmhurst, which sees a large Central and South American population that is particularly at risk of Chagas disease.
Responsibilities include:
- Identifying at-risk patients in a primary care and/or OBGYN clinics at Elmhurst hospital in Queens
- Screening patients in a primary care clinic and/or OBGYN to obtain pertinent patient data
- Ensuring patient files are appropriately flagged for further evaluation
- Providing additional follow-through to ensure that patients who screened positive are receive confirmatory diagnosis, and are appropriately tracked
- Supporting additional educational efforts as needed for the grant, which may include coordinating virtual symposiums and other teaching sessions
- Helping to develop websites concerning Chagas disease and Immigrant health
Position Requirements
- Must be a fluent Spanish speaker (critical as the patient population is predominantly from Central and South America and Spanish is typically their first language)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Pre-health or public health curriculum a plus but not required.
- Must be able to travel between clinic locations in the Bronx and Queens
- Planning to take at least 2 gap years before matriculating into an advanced degree program
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. May use other web-based programs as assigned.
- Must demonstrate good judgment, initiative and attention to detail
- Ability to check applicable policies and procedures
Time Commitment
Full-time. 35 hours per week, may work weekends and/or evenings depending on preference/flexibility.
