COVID-19 Housing, Emergency Funding, and Operational FAQ

Below are answers to recent questions about housing, access to emergency funding for relocation and storage costs, and general operational logistics.

Columbia University is offering all undergraduate and Postbac Premed students presently living in Columbia Residential housing up to $500 in emergency funding to assist with travel and storage expenses related to their departure from campus. Dual BA Program students and those on study abroad programs are also eligible.

Yes, Dual BA students leaving France or Ireland and Columbia study abroad students returning to their permanent residences are eligible for COVID-19 Emergency Funding to help with relocation costs.

No, Dual BA students do not need to fill out the Spring 2020 Housing Survey. Dual BA students do need to fill out the Dual Degree Program Travel Survey.

While GS students who leave Columbia Residential units in the spring 2020 semester will be prioritized for housing when normal operations resume in the coming months, we are not able to guarantee that housing will be available at that time. 

While we will prioritize students who leave Columbia Residential units in the spring 2020 semester for a return to housing when normal operations resume in the coming months, we cannot guarantee students will be housed the same unit.

This funding is only available to students who are leaving Columbia housing and those who are in Dual BA or Study Abroad programs.

As it currently stands, Columbia Residential's subletting policy remains unchanged. Residents may apply to sublet if they are leaving the NYC Metro Area with approval from their school.

We do not yet know when students will be allowed to return to Columbia Residential housing, although we will communicate once we know when normal operations are expected to resume.

Please make sure to follow the instructions on SSOL for direct deposit. Typically, the Electronic Funds Transfer will take three to five business days. We will begin processing the funds on Monday, March 16.

A check will be generated and mailed to your local US address. This will take approximately two weeks. The University will not be able to mail the check internationally.

All Columbia University Libraries are closed until further notice. No fines will be charged for overdue or recalled items until further notice. Please monitor the Libraries website for updates.
