The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research recently introduced their newly developed Undergraduate Research Opportunities Platform (UROP). This platform acts as a central repository where you can search for on-campus or Columbia-affiliated research opportunities across all schools and campuses, no matter your own major or affiliation. These research opportunities range from individual projects, through prizes and fellowships, to cohort programs. Moreover, all fields of study are represented, from the sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Research mentors come from the breadth of the university, including Columbia's professional schools.
The platform’s contents will be continually updated throughout the academic year, so students are strongly encouraged to check in periodically to see which new research opportunities are available; there is also an alert feature to receive email updates whenever relevant listings are posted.
With this platform, The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research hopes to encourage all undergraduates to consider doing research as part of their experience at Columbia. There are plenty of research opportunities even for freshmen, as many of these do not necessarily require prior experience. While learning how to conduct research is a necessary step for those who intend to go on to graduate study, research is deeply rewarding in and of itself. As an undergraduate researcher, students hone transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem defining and solving, written and oral communication skills, and time management; make valuable connections with other undergraduate researchers, graduate students, post-docs, and members of Columbia’s world-renowned faculty; have the chance to delve into a topic that may not be covered in-depth in their major’s course offerings; and learn how to apply knowledge in different disciplines.
