The School of General Studies has announced the names of 50 students who will be initiatied into the New York Delta chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society for 2015. Students were chosen by a faculty selection committee of Phi Beta Kappa members based on the breadth, depth, and rigor of their academic programs, as well as faculty recommendations from those who work closely with them.
Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest academic honor society, and its initials represent the society's motto: "love of learning is the guide of life." Today, the society "celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences," and "the ideal Phi Beta Kappan has demonstrated intellectual integrity, tolerance for other views, and a broad range of academic interests."
Roughly 10 percent of U.S. institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters, and among those institutions, only about 10 percent of arts and sciences graduates are selected for membership, making it one of the highest academic honors for undergraduate students in the nation.
This year's Phi Beta Kappa initiation ceremony will be held at Faculty House on Friday, May 15 at 12 p.m.
