Types of Aid

Types of Aid

Two primary types of financial aid are available to students:

Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships or grants may be awarded by either the School of General Studies—i.e., institutional aid—or outside sources, such as a foundation, the federal government, or state government. Scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid.

Federal and Private Education Loans

For information about federal education loans, see Federal Financial Aid. For an overview of private education loans, see the Student Financial Services website.

All financial aid is administered by the GS Office of Educational Financing in 408 Lewisohn Hall; 212-854-5410; gs_financial_aid@columbia.edu.
