The Campus & The City
The Best of Both Worlds
Columbia’s full name, "Columbia University in the City of New York," reflects the special strength of the University’s location in one of the world’s great metropolitan areas. On campus, Columbia students have all the resources of a major research university. Right outside the campus gates are New York’s Morningside Heights and Upper West Side, two of the city’s most vibrant residential areas, and a quick subway or bus ride provides Columbia students access to all of New York’s cultural resources.
The New York Advantage
Columbia’s location in New York is a special advantage to students in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program. The city is home to five medical schools and several major medical research centers. It boasts the largest municipal hospital system, as well as many of the leading teaching and specialty hospitals in the United States. This concentration of medical practice provides students with a wide variety of opportunities to gain experience in both clinical settings and in medical research, through volunteer service and paid employment.
