Sciences Po Dedicates Reims Campus Library to Late Dean Emeritus Peter J. Awn

Yesterday evening, Sciences Po President Frédéric Mion hosted a ceremony in Reims to name the campus’ main library in honor of Peter J. Awn, late Dean Emeritus of the Columbia University School of General Studies (GS), who served as dean from 1997 to 2017, and as a professor of Islamic and comparative religion at the University for more than four decades.

The newly-named Bibliothèque Peter Awn will hold Awn’s personal book collection, and serve as an intellectual commons for students, preserving his legacy of belief in the power of untraditional, innovative education.

“It is without a doubt that our treasured and vibrant dual degree program with Sciences Po forever connects our institutions and reflects the brilliance and bold approach of both Francis Vérillaud and Peter, as well as their visionary leadership in pulling this off,” said Lisa Rosen-Metsch, Dean of the School of General Studies.

In 2008, Francis Vérillaud, then-Vice President for International Affairs at Sciences Po, travelled to New York to meet with Dean Awn in Lewisohn Hall—a meeting that would ultimately set the foundation for a collaboration between the two universities and create a new and exciting model for international education. It would be realized as the Dual BA Program Between Columbia University and Sciences Po, which redefined the notion of what a study abroad experience might encompass, offering undergraduates the chance to immerse themselves in two distinct cultures and academic environments, and earn two degrees in just four years.

Through this collaboration, Awn significantly expanded the mission of nontraditional education at GS, building upon the ideals embodied by the founding of the Joint Program with List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary, which was established at GS in 1954.

Peter’s stature as an intellectual giant on the Faculty of Arts & Sciences coupled with his warmth, wit, and contagious humor made him the perfect leader to catapult the School of General Studies within Columbia and to secure its place among world-class colleges.

The Program, whose first official class graduated in 2015, has now graduated nearly 200 students. Many have been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and with the highest Latin honors at Columbia, and have gone on to study at the world’s leading graduate schools. These graduates also include two Rhodes Scholars, as well as those who have landed top positions pursuing impressive careers in diverse fields.

“Peter’s stature as an intellectual giant on the Faculty of Arts & Sciences coupled with his warmth, wit, and contagious humor made him the perfect leader to catapult the School of General Studies within Columbia and to secure its place among world-class colleges,” Rosen-Metsch said.

In attendance at the ceremony were relatives of Awn, in addition to numerous students, staff, faculty, parents, and alumni of both institutions. Speakers included President Mion, Dean Rosen-Metsch, Francis Vérillaud, Curtis Rodgers, Vice Dean of GS, and Norman Laurila, a close lifelong friend of Awn.

“Peter was never one to seek the spotlight, but somehow the spotlight always found him. It might have had something to do with the suspenders and brightly colored socks. His larger-than-life presence was something he grew into over time. Something he earned, student by student, and something he didn’t seek out or embrace until late in his deanship. But he did earn it, and he earned it beautifully,” Rodgers said. “While he was always the first to thank everyone else and give credit to everyone else, and was a reluctant recipient of all the honors and accolades he received during his life, this honor—the naming of the library on this campus—would be the one he would embrace most. Thank you.”
