On Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22, The School of General Studies welcomed 100 students from the incoming cohort at the Summer New Student Welcome event. 

On June 2, 2020, Dean Mary C. Boyce, Ph.D. (The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science,) Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch (School of General Studies,) and Dean James J. Valentini (Columbia College) sent the following message to undergraduate students regarding recent anti-Black violence.

Joseph Kissane, former Director of Columbia’s Summer Session, former School of General Studies Dean of Students, and a beloved preceptor of English and comparative literature, passed away from COVID-19 on April 19, 2020.

The Columbia University Postbac Premed Program celebrated Postbac Class Day on Friday, May 15 via a pre-recorded virtual ceremony. Faculty, administrators, fellow students, friends, and family honored the graduates for completing this important step on their journey to medical school and beyond.

On Friday, May 15, the New York Delta Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society virtually initiated 56 GS students at its annual Induction Ceremony. 

The School of General Studies celebrated the Class of 2020 on Monday, May 18 at GS Class Day via a pre-recorded virtual ceremony.

On the morning of Tuesday, May 19, the School of General Studies celebrated the academic excellence and outstanding leadership of students at the first-ever Academic Prizes and Student Leadership Awards Virtual Ceremony. 

Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch has announced the featured speakers for the 2020 Postbaccalaureate Premedical Class Day ceremony. The Class Day Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Alwyn Cohall. The Class Day Student Speaker will be Christopher DeVita.

Karianne Weber '21, a current student in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program, reflects on her current experience working as a nurse caring for patients with COVID-19 on the frontlines in New Jersey, and shares how she and her colleagues have gotten creative with delivering care to their patients while reducing their risk of exposure. 

Dean Lisa Rosen-Metsch has announced the featured speakers for the 2020 Columbia University School of General Studies Class Day ceremony. The Class Day Keynote Speaker will be Michael Novak '09. The Class of 2020 Valedictorian will be Sungtae Yoon. The Class of 2020 Salutatorian will be Alison (Ali) Block.

Students applying for institutional financial aid for the 2020-2021 academic year are advised to submit all of the required forms as soon as possible, and no later than Friday, May 1.

Many graduate programs pushed back their application deadlines. Students are invited to check the following list to ensure their respective program deadline has not passed.

Students are invited to check into a virtual study hall organized by the Academic Resource Center (ARC) to receive peer support and with accountability and general study strategies heading into the finals period.

Students, especially those contemplating future graduate school and educational plans, are invited to attend this event hosted by Tiffany Decker, Senior Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs.
