The below email was recently sent to all undergraduates, introducing the University’s new Undergraduate International Travel Policy. GS students who will be outside of the United States on Columbia-related travel during or after the summer 2017 term must work with the office organizing their travel to ensure they comply with the Undergraduate International Travel Policy. Although this new policy adds a few additional steps to the pre-departure process, it does not replace any of the requirements already in place across the University (i.e., ISOS MyTrips, etc.). Students with any questions or concerns about this new policy should contact

Dear Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and General Studies Students,

We are writing to let you know about our new Undergraduate International Travel Policy, which applies to any student global travel that is organized, funded, arranged or recognized by Columbia taking place on or after Tuesday, May 2, 2017. This is a complement to the University’s International Travel Planning Policy, which was updated this spring.

Our policy mandates that once you have been accepted into a global program or secured an independent global opportunity, you must obtain school-level approval by completing the School Sponsorship application before traveling out of the United States. This policy applies to all international academic, service, internship or research trips coordinated through the Center for Career Education, the Office of Global Programs and Fellowships, and Undergraduate Student Life, as well as experiences organized or funded in any way by a faculty member, recognized student group, department, institute, program, or school in the University.

We realize that this may seem like an extra logistical step in an already complicated process, but we assure you that it is for your own safety and well-being. We encourage you to take advantage of global experiences at Columbia, and consider them to be important parts of your undergraduate education; however, we also realize that traveling abroad can entail risk, even for the most seasoned travelers. Preparing for an enriching and safe experience in each global destination requires a different strategy, and should there be an emergency, we need to know how to reach you.

To complete a School Sponsorship application, you must login to the Undergraduate Travel Web App no later than four weeks prior to your departure, and must update your application with any changes to your itinerary while abroad. You are also required to be in compliance with the University’s policy, which includes maintaining adequate health insurance with international coverage while abroad.

You can visit the travel policy website for more information about the Undergraduate International Travel Policy and to learn the steps you must take prior to departure. If you have questions about how this policy will affect you or your upcoming travel, please email
