Gravity in Art

Mary Edwards ’66GS,’86GSAS recently published a collection of essays entitled Gravity in Art: Essays on Weight and Weightlessness in Painting, Sculpture and Photography

The book, containing 26 essays, was inspired by the ideas of the late Howard McParlin Davis, who taught in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University for many years, and focuses on interpretations of the physical phenomena of gravity and levity in various examples of western art from the Roman period to the present day.
