Fall 2012 Entering Class Is Welcomed by Alumni

September 1, 2012

On August 27, 2012, the School of General Studies welcomed a new class of more than 400 students to campus to kick off a week of orientation activities. During this week, GS alumni participated in two panel discussions to share their experiences as students and advice for success at Columbia and beyond.

The first panel was hosted on August 28 for all incoming GS students. Christopher Riano ’07 moderated and was joined by fellow Recent Alumni Leadership Committee (RALC) members Jesse Dean ’08, Sheridan Gayer ’04, Elle Littlefield ’12, Ceci Thomas ’05, and Jessica Thompson ’07. Speakers shared their diverse GS stories, as well as the campus activities and invaluable resources they benefited from while studying at the University.

The second panel was held on August 30, and all incoming Military Veteran and NROTC students were invited to attend. Richard Baldassari ’14, current GS student and President of the U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University, moderated a lively discussion with panelists Robert Chao ’10, Sean O’Keefe ’10, Justin White ’05, ’07BUS, and Paul Yates ’05, ’08BUS. Each discussed their transition from military life to the Columbia campus and, most importantly, how to translate their unique experience into rewarding careers.
