Multicultural Graduation Ceremonies

Multicultural graduation ceremonies celebrate graduating seniors from all for undergraudate schools at the University, and take place annually in late April and early May. Dates will be announced each spring. These ceremonies are co-sponsored by GS Student Life, Barnard Student Life, and the CC/SEAS Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Registration for all events opens in January 2018.

Asian Graduation

Asian Graduation is an annual celebration recognizing the achievements of graduating Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian American communities on campus. In collaboration with the Columbia Alumni Association and the Asian Columbia Alumni Association, Asian Graduation honors the legacies of heritages and histories, the voices that have individually and collectively impacted the University, and the invaluable network of shared strength and support among fellow Columbians past and present.

Lavender Graduation (LGBTQ Graduation)

Lavender Graduation is a ceremony that celebrates graduating LGBTQ and allied students, as well as the history of the gay rights movement in New York. First started at the University of Michigan in 1995, the ceremony is conducted by hundreds of universities nationwide including Princeton, Duke, MIT, and NYU. The color lavender, adopted by the gay rights movement in the 1960s, is the main color of Sayville (Gayville), NY where the veterans of Stonewall socialized.

Black Graduation

Black Graduation serves as an intimate gathering that celebrates the culture and accomplishments of the Columbia and Barnard black undergraduate graduates. This ceremony has a long-standing history within the University and was first initiated by students who wanted the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize the important role that black students have played in shaping the University landscape.

Raza Graduation (Latinx Graduation)

Raza Graduation (formerly know as Latinx Graduation) is a celebration of the accomplishments of Columbia and Barnard Latinx undergraduate graduates. Raza Graduation was first initiated by students who wanted the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize the important role that Latinx students have played in shaping the landscape of Columbia. This ceremony provides an intimate setting for students, faculty, staff, alumni, family, and friends to honor the graduates, in addition to welcoming them into their important roles as Barnard and Columbia alumni.
