As an international student, do I need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL; IELTS)?

If your native or predominant spoken language is not English and the primary language of instruction in your high school or secondary education was not English, you must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting official scores from TOEFL, the Duolingo English Test, or IELTS. The Duolingo online exam takes about 30 minutes to complete, and test results are available within 48 hours. The TOEFL or IELTS must be taken within two years of application to the School of General Studies. For more information on testing and scores, visit the Appying to GS page.
