Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road, and New Jersey Transit arrive at New York's Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan. Metro-North Railroad drops passengers at Grand Central Station and at 125th Street, both on the East Side of Manhattan.
Bus lines, such as Greyhound or Trailways, terminate at New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal, located at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.
Major airports in the New York metropolitan area include LaGuardia Airport in Queens, John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, and Newark International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. Each airport is a significant distance from midtown Manhattan, so you will need to plan additional travel once you have actually landed in New York.
There are many travel options to choose from once you land at one of the city's major airports. The easiest, but most expensive way is by taxi. Other options include the AirTrain from JFK, the MTA's M60 bus from LaGuardia Airport (which drops passengers right at the Morningside Campus at 116th and Broadway), the Super Shuttle, or one of the many bus companies that operate safe and efficient trips to Manhattan, such as Olympia Bus Line and New York Airport Service Express.
To reach Columbia, taking a taxi from midtown is efficient and costs about $15. A taxi from the 125th Street Metro-North station at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue costs about $10.
From the airports, cab fare varies. A ride from John F. Kennedy Airport costs a flat fee of $45 (plus any tolls). Fares from LaGuardia start at around $25 (plus any tolls), while a ride from Newark Airport may cost as much as $65 (plus tolls). Getting a taxi from a taxi stand located in Ground Transportation areas of the airports is the safest way to obtain a cab.
