Part-time, Volunteer/Paid, Brain Bank Assistant, Neuropathology

Position Description
Dr. John Crary is seeking students to volunteer as assistants in the Neuropathology Brain Bank and Research CoRE at Mount Sinai. As a part of the Neuropathology Research Division Training Program (NeRD-TP), students will learn neuroanatomy and how to diagnose brain diseases. Students will also gain exposure to challenges associated with treating, diagnosing, and studying brain diseases. Students will have the opportunity to graduate this program after one semester and become paid assistant prosectors.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting physicians (prosectors) and assistant prosectors in brain dissection and processing of brain tissue
  • Speaking with patients and their families about participating in brain donation
  • Interfacing with neuropathologists and research scientists
  • Attendance and participation in Friday brain bank meetings
  • Presenting on a neuropathology-related topic at one brain bank meeting
  • Attending movement disorder video rounds with neurologists and fellows
  • Helping neurologists at support groups inform patients about brain donation and our research program
  • Attending grand rounds and department lectures 

Position Requirements

  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.3 
  • Must be a current or recently graduated post-bac student
  • Some exposure to neuroscience (i.e. undergraduate major), psychology, or related discipline

  • Intent to matriculate into an M.D. or M.D.- Ph.D. program at the conclusion

Time Commitment
2 days per week - 5 hours 1 day a week (~12-5pm), 4.5 hours on Fridays (10:30-3 pm), and 1 weekend per month. Hours are flexible.
