Position Description 
The Orthopedic Surgery Laboratory at SUNY Downstate Medical Center is seeking a clinical research fellow to assist Dr. Steven M. Koehler, a hand/microsurgeon, in all of his current, multi-disciplinary research projects. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Collaborating with Dr. Koehler on his clinical studies which involve interaction with a diverse patient population, electronic chart reviews, and statistical analysis
  • Working with biomedical engineers on-site to conduct biomechanical cadaver studies
  • Conducting basic science work and translational research on nerve repair and regeneration
  • Assisting during rabbit surgeries, providing rabbit pre-and post-op care, and performing subsequent sample analysis
  • Collaborating with Dr. Koehler on his clinical studies which involve interaction with a diverse patient population, electronic chart reviews, and statistical analysis

Position Requirements: 

  • Strong work ethic and communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently
  • Prior research and scientific experience
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Fluency in statistical programming and analysis software (e.g. SPSS) a plus

Time Commitment 
Full-time, with a minimum commitment of one year.

Note
With this position comes the possibility to attend lectures and Grand Rounds, as well as shadow Dr. Koehler both in his high-volume hand clinic and in the operating room. Throughout the summer, there are also many medical students conducting research in the laboratory as well, giving the research fellow various opportunities to learn more about life in medical school throughout their time here.
