Position Description 

Dr. Yelena Akelina is seeking students to volunteer in the microsurgery training and research lab as a teaching and research assistants. This very unique and world-known lab that teaches microvascular procedures, emphasizing vascular anastomoses, interpositional vein grafts, and nerve repairs on rat models to different specialties surgeons. The courses are offered thought out the year to more than 200 surgeons from 60 countries.Volunteers will be able to participate in the Basic Microsurgery course during 90 days program and work on some clinical relevant research projects’. They will interact with different surgeons who are students in the microsurgery program.

Responsibilities include

  • Animal handling

  • Animal preparation for the surgery

  • Organizing surgical trays

  • Assisting in teaching microsurgery 

  • Participating in research projects and work on animal protocols

  • Shadowing clinicans and doctors (if interested)

Position requirements

  • Must be in their glide year 
  • Must complete all necessary regulatory and skills training from Columbia University 
  • Must have medical clearance 

Time Commitment
Part-time or full-time, during the summer (May-August).
