GS Planning Day
GS Planning Day
Congratulations on your acceptance to GS!
GS Planning Day is a series of events designed to assist students in making a smooth transition to Columbia University. The activities planned during GS Planning Day will give you the chance to meet other GS students, find out more about financing your education, familiarize yourself with the Morningside Heights campus, and begin to acquaint yourself with the undergraduate degree program.
Academic Planning Session (APS)
While most of the activities of GS Planning Day are optional, attendance at an Academic Planning Session (APS) is:
- Mandatory for all new students
- A prerequisite for meeting with an academic advisor and registering for classes
During the APS, students will review the general academic requirements, the registration and advising process, and other policies they will need to know as a GS student.
Important Registration Information
Students cannot attend an APS until they have formally accepted the offer of admission, signified by returning the Acceptance Reply Form along with a $500 tuition deposit. In order to assign students an academic advisor who will register them for courses, these items must be received two weeks prior to attending an APS.
Students are encouraged to attend an APS at their earliest convenience. The sooner students can register for classes, the better chance they will have of getting into courses that fit both interests and schedule. Seats are limited for each APS.
Note: Only one APS may be registered for at a time. Students who determine they can no longer attend an APS they have registered for must cancel their registration before registering for a new APS. If this is the case, refer to the confirmation email, which provides a URL to make the cancellation. After the APS has been canceled, return to this page to register for a new APS.
To complete the registration process, students will need their Columbia University ID (CUID) provided in the Admissions Packet. Students who have problems registering for an APS should email email@example.com.
Registration Deadline: 12 p.m., three business days prior to the session.
In addition to the mandatory Academic Planning Session, students will have the opportunity to take a student-led campus tour, meet with a financial aid officer, and attend a meet-and-greet with current GS students.
Remote Academic Planning Sessions
Registration Deadline: 12 p.m., one business day prior to the session.
Remote Academic Planning Sessions are intended for students who are unable to attend an on-campus Planning Day, and as they take place online, do not include the student-led campus tour, financial aid session, or meet-and-greet with current students.
Meeting with an Academic Advisor
Students who live in the New York area may make an appointment to meet with their advisor after they attend an APS. Next-day advising appointments are reserved for out-of-town students.
Students who live outside the tri-state area and plan to make a special trip to New York to attend GS Planning Day may request to schedule an appointment with their academic advisor for the day after the APS. At least one week in advance of their scheduled APS, students should email firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
- CUID (found in Admissions Packet)
- Date for which you have registered for an APS (and received a confirmation email)
- Phone number
- Email address
Students who have not registered for an APS online will not be able to schedule an appointment with their advisor. While a next-day appointment is not guaranteed, we do our best to accomodate every student. There are no same-day appointments.
