Federal Financial Aid

Federal Financial Aid

First, it is important to note that both federal and institutional financial aid opportunities are limited because the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program is a certificate program and not a degree-granting program. Funding will primarily be in the form of student loans. Federal grants, Federal Work-Study, and Federal Perkins Loan programs are not available to Postbac Premed students. Listed below are some of the basic details regarding financial aid for a Postbac student.

Federal Financial Aid

Postbac students are eligible to borrow Federal Direct Loans for the program. Amounts and types of Federal Direct Loans depend on factors obtained by the school after a student completes the standard federal aid application (see below).

Federal Direct Loans are usually awarded for a two-semester loan period and require an enrollment of at least 6 credits each semester. In certain circumstances, a Federal Direct Loan may be awarded for one semester. For additional information on Federal Direct Loans (and alternative loans), please visit the Columbia University Financial Aid webpage at http://sfs.columbia.edu/content/federal-loans

In order for eligibility for a Federal Direct loan to be determined, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA code for Columbia University is 002707.
