Traveling to New York City

Regional Train

Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road, and New Jersey Transit arrive at New York's Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan. Metro-North Railroad drops passengers at Grand Central Station and at 125th Street, both on the East Side of Manhattan.

Bus

Bus lines, such as Greyhound or Trailways, terminate at New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal, located at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.

Air

Major airports in the New York metropolitan area include LaGuardia Airport in Queens, John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, and Newark International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. Each airport is a significant distance from midtown Manhattan, so you will need to plan additional travel once you have actually landed in New York.

There are many travel options to choose from once you land at one of the city's major airports. The easiest, but most expensive way is by taxi. Other options include the AirTrain from JFK, the MTA's M60 bus from LaGuardia Airport (which drops passengers right at the Morningside Campus at 116th Street and Broadway Avenue), the Super Shuttle, or one of the many bus companies that operate safe and efficient trips to Manhattan, such as Olympia Trails Bus Line or New York Airport Service.

Traveling to Morningside Heights

Taxi

To reach Columbia, taking a taxi from midtown is efficient and costs about $15. A taxi from the 125th Street Metro-North station at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue costs about $10.

From the airports, cab fare varies. A ride from John F. Kennedy Airport costs a flat fee of $45 (plus any tolls).  Fares from LaGuardia start at around $25 (plus any tolls), while a ride from Newark Airport may cost as much as $65 (plus tolls). Getting a taxi from a taxi stand located in Ground Transportation areas of the airports is the safest way to obtain a cab.

The local Number 1 subway line serves Morningside Heights. Stations are located at 116th Street and Broadway Avenue and 110th Street and Broadway Avenue. You may take the Number 2 and 3 express trains from downtown, but be sure to transfer to the local 1 train at 96th Street. A one-way fare is $2.50. We recommend that you purchase a multi-ride MetroCard, available at subway stations and news agents around the city.

Five bus lines (M4, M5, M11, M60, M104) also service Columbia and the Morningside Heights area. Buses accept the $2.50 fare in coins, but it is recommended that you purchase a MetroCard, available at subway stations and news agents around the city.

The Morningside Campus

The main entrance to Columbia University is at Broadway Avenue and 116th Street. Upon entry through the Gates, 116th Street becomes College Walk between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues. The main plaza of the campus is flanked by Low Library, the main administrative building and home to the Visitor Center, on the north, and Butler Library, the main University library, on the south. GS’s administrative home, Lewisohn Hall, is to the left of Low Library on North Campus. For more details about the Morningside Campus, please see the Campus Map.
