Students interested in philosophy may pursue a major either in philosophy or in economics-philosophy. Because philosophy treats issues fundamental to both the sciences and the humanities, students are also welcome to combine their philosophy major with work in other fields. Before declaring a major, either in philosophy or in economics-philosophy, and before deciding to combine philosophy with another discipline, students should meet with the director of undergraduate studies to formulate the program that will be best for them. Philosophy majors are given a foundation in logic and philosophical methodology, and are asked to confront fundamental questions in the main areas of philosophy: epistemology and metaphysics, ethics and political philosophy, the philosophy of mind and language, and the history of philosophy. The department requires that all majors take at least one seminar (PHIL C3912), which is designed to allow students to focus on particular philosophical issues or texts in greater depth. Outstanding seniors may also pursue their own philosophical project in a senior thesis. Over and above the courses required of all majors, there is room for considerable flexibility. Through an appropriate choice of electives from among the department’s course offerings (and from related courses in other departments), there are special opportunities for focusing more intensively on one or two subfields of philosophy: for example, logic and the philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy, or the history of philosophy. Students should consult with the director of undergraduate studies on how best to pursue such programs.

Grading
Courses in which a grade of D has been received do not count toward the major or concentration requirements.
Departmental Honors
Departmental honors are highly competitive. Normally no more than 10 percent of the majors graduating in the department each year receive departmental honors.
In order to qualify for departmental honors in philosophy, a student must have a grade point average of at least 3.6 in the major.
For students with a GPA of 3.6 or above, there are two possible routes to consideration:
1. A student may complete a senior thesis; all students who complete senior theses are considered for honors.
2. A student may be nominated by a faculty member early in the spring semester of the senior year; nominated students are invited to submit a writing sample. A nominated student who is also writing a thesis may submit their thesis as the writing sample, or may choose to submit a different work.
Both the senior theses and writing samples are due in early April. The departmental honors committee then review the submitted material and the academic records of the students, and report to the full faculty. The full faculty then decide which students to recommend for departmental honors .
Senior Thesis Undergraduates majoring in Philosophy or Economics-Philosophy may apply to write a Senior Thesis. Students who wish to write a thesis should approach a faculty member at the end of their junior or beginning of their senior year, and begin working on the application early in the Fall semester of their senior year. Applications are due in early December, and are reviewed by a committee which includes the Director of Undergraduate Studies; students are notified of the committee's decision within two weeks. Students whose applications are approved should register for their faculty advisor's section of Supervised Senior Research for the Spring term of the senior year. Theses are due in early April. All students who complete theses are considered for Departmental Honors.
Undergraduate Requirements
For a Major in Philosophy
Students considering a major in philosophy are strongly encouraged to meet with the director of undergraduate studies early in their sophomore year. All majors must consult the director of undergraduate studies each term before registering for classes in order to plan and update their individual programs of study.
Students planning to major in philosophy are advised to begin with PHIL C1010. Beginning students are especially encouraged to take 2000-level courses, both in the history of philosophy and in systematic philosophy. These courses are typically less specialized and less narrowly focused than higher-numbered ones. More advanced students are encouraged to take 3000-level courses. The department requires that all majors take at least one seminar, PHIL C3912 .
No more than one course at the 1000-level can be counted toward the major. In order to enroll in one of the 4000-level courses, students must have taken at least four courses in Philosophy.
Students may choose courses prefixed with G only with the instructor’s permission. Additionally, because these courses are capped, students should register early.
The major requires a minimum of 30 points in philosophy chosen from courses prefixed with C, G, V, or W, including:
- PHIL V2101 or another course in the history of ancient or medieval philosophy (e.g., PHIL W3131)
- PHIL V2201 or another course in the history of late medieval or early modern philosophy (e.g., PHIL V3237 or PHIL V3264)
- PHIL V3411 or, in exceptional cases, a more advanced course in logic
- At least one course in either metaphysics or epistemology (e.g., PHIL G4501, PHIL V3960, or a related course to be chosen in consultation with the director of undergraduate studies)
- At least one course in either ethics or social and political philosophy (e.g., PHIL V2702, PHIL V3701, PHIL 3751, or a related course to be chosen in consultation with the director of undergradute studies)
- PHIL C3912.
For a Concentration in Philosophy
Philosophy, as an academic discipline, has significant points of contact with a wide range of other subjects—in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. A concentration in philosophy thus can be an attractive option for many students. Those considering becoming concentrators are strongly encouraged to meet with the director of undergraduate studies early in their sophomore year, in order to discuss their specific interests and to plan their programs of study. All concentrators should consult with the director of undergraduate studies each term before registering for courses.
The concentration requires a minimum of 24 points in philosophy, chosen from courses prefixed with C, G, V, or W. There are no specific courses required for the concentration.
Students may choose courses prefixed with G only with the instructor’s permission. Additionally, because these courses are capped, students should register early. PHIL C3912 is open to junior and senior concentrators who have taken at least four courses in philosophy.
For a Major in Economics-Philosophy

Economics-philosophy is an interdisciplinary major that, while introducing students to the basic methodologies of economics and philosophy, stresses areas of particular concern to both. These include subjects such as rationality and decision making, justice and efficiency, freedom and collective choice, the logic of empirical theories and their testing. Many of the issues are dealt with historically, and classic texts of Plato, Kant, Mill, Marx, and Smith are reviewed.
Two advisers are assigned for the interdepartmental major, one in the Department of Economics and one in the Department of Philosophy. Please note that the economics adviser can only advise on the economics requirements and the philosophy adviser can only advise on the philosophy requirements.
The economics-philosophy major requires a total of 44 points: 16 points in economics, 15 points in philosophy, 6 points in mathematics, 3 points in statistics, and 4 points in the interdisciplinary seminar as follows:

PHIL V3751x and y Political Philosophy 3 pts. Six major concepts of political philosophy including authority, rights, equality, justice, liberty and democracy are examined in three different ways. First the conceptual issues are analyzed through contemporary essays on these topics by authors like Peters, Hart, Williams, Berlin, Rawls and Schumpeter. Second the classical sources on these topics are discussed through readings from Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Marx, Plato, Mill and Rousseau. Third some attention is paid to relevant contexts of application of these concepts in political society, including such political movements as anarchism, international human rights, conservative, liberal, and Marxist economic policies as well as competing models of democracy.
PHIL V3752x Philosophy of Law 3 pts. This course explores philosophical reflection on the relationship between law, society and morality. We discuss the nature of law, the nature of legal reasoning, the relationship between law and social policy, and central concepts in civil and criminal law. PHIL W3852x Philosophy of Literature 3 pts. The course reviews and analyzes five topics in philosophical commentary on works of literature. The relationship between literature and truth is developed from Plato and Aristotle to analytical and existential philosophies of the twentieth century, including Graham Hough and J.P. Sartre. Theories of interpretation of literary writing are examined from classical rhetorical authors through medieval commentators including Dante and Maimonides to Northrop Frye's theory of myth and a critique of Jacques Derrida's views on deconstructionism. The question of the universality of works of literature or of the claims for pluralism are analyzed through accounts of classicism and enlightenment through interpretations of romanticism. The relevance of theories of the genesis of literature for the understanding of literature is discussed including Marxism, Freudianism and Modernism. The relationship between literature and morality is examined ranging from the thesis that art is necessarily moral to the thesis of art for art's sake. This course will be capped at 40 students.

PHIL C3912x (Section 005) Seminar: Metaphysics 3 pts. Prerequisites: Required of senior majors, but also open to junior majors, and junior and senior concentrators who have taken at least four philosophy courses. There has traditionally been much interst in the notion of substance. Substances are often said to be fundamental, independent, unified, and the bearers of properties. But the very notion of substance has raised many questions through the medieval, early modern and contemporary eras. For one thing, there is little agreement as to whether substances have all these characteristics. For another, there is little agreement about which things are substances (particles? rocks? organisms? God?) And some have even questioned whether the notion of substance is intelligible. In this seminar we will discuss major works from each of these eras. Our goal is to understand how authors such as Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, Descartes, and Spinoza thoguht about the notion and then discuss the bearing of their work on contemporary metaphysics.

PHIL C3912x (Section 014) Seminar: Liberalism & Its Critics 3 pts. Contemporary liberal political philosophy presumes that governments should protect a fair distribution of liberties and material resources so that autonomous individuals may live as they choose. This course will examine some influential examples of this view, in the work of philosophers such as Rawls, Dworkin and Rorty, along with important criticisms of the values and assumptions that underwrite the view. For instance, does liberalism rest on a mistaken conception of the person? Does it emphasize the soverign individual at the expense of community. Does its commitment to toleration embody an unrealizable and even morally problematic ideal? This course will consider influential versions of these critiques, and ask whether any genuinely liberal political philosophy can accomodate them.
PHIL C3912x (Section 018) Seminar: Analytic Philosophy 3 pts. The course aims at equipping the students with basic concepts and tools of analytic philosophy and to show how the analytic approach applies in different areas. Among the basic tools are the type/ token distinction, intensional/ extensional, sense and reference, the concept of a proposition and propositional attitudes, Intentionality, the De re/ De dicto distinction. The plan is to cover examples from philosophy of language, epistemology, philosophy of mind (the mind body problem), and ethics.
PHIL W3953y Philosophy and Literature: Shakespeare 3 pts. The seminar will consider seven plays by Shakespeare, devoting two sessions to each, and pairing each with other textsw (typically with philosophical texts). Among the plays considered will be Merchant of Venice, All's Well that Ends Well, Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry IV Part I, and King Lear. The readings will also include extracts from the writings of Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Anthony Appiah, Plato, Camus, Schopenhauer, and Stanley Cavell. Open to studnets majoring either in Philosophy or in English and Comparative Literature.
PHIL W3960y Epistemology 4 pts. Corequisites: PHIL W3963 Required Discussion Section 0 points What can we know? What is knowledge? How is it different from belief? Are there irrational beliefs?
