Tutors are one of the most integral components of the ARC. They provide instruction and academic support to GS students.  ARC tutors facilitate the learning by helping students become independent learners and by fostering accountability for their learning process.

Requirements

In order to be considered for tutoring positions, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • Must be a Columbia University student (undergraduate, Postbac Premed, or graduate)

  • Demonstrated high level of proficiency in the subject matter - must have an A- or better in the subject they wish to tutor.

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

  • Written recommendation from one faculty member (Columbia University faculty preferred).

  • Written recommendation from academic advisor.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.  A tutor must possess a sense of humor, the ability to motivate students, be encouraging and forceful, communicate well, and be creative.

  • Excellent time management skills.  A tutor must be able to balance academic, extracurricular, and tutorial responsibilities.

  • Excellent organizational skills.  A tutor must be able to assist tutee(s) in organizing the completion of course assignments.

Job Description

  • Provide academic assistance to students individually and in pairs. Discretion is key—tutors must maintain students' confidentiality.

  • Assist students in developing effective learning strategies and habits.

  • Be punctual for all tutoring appointments and tutor trainings.

  • Participate in an evaluation process to measure performance and develop a plan of action to address areas that need improvement.

  • Maintain accurate records and complete all required paperwork.

  • Participate in training and meetings as scheduled.

  • Communicate frequently with ARC staff.

  • Inform GS students of other resources available to them—learning strategy workshops, individual academic consultations, etc.

Compensation

Tutors may work a minimum of six hours per week and a maximum of 15 hours per week. There are no insurance benefits associated with this position.
  • Undergraduates—$15 per hour.

  • Graduate/Postbac—$20 per hour.

Rates are the same for individual, pair, and online tutoring.

College Reading and Learning (CRLA) Certification

  • Participation in CRLA-style tutor training sessions is mandatory.

  • CRLA is an international, certified tutor-training organization.

  • The ARC plans to become CRLA-certified within the next year.
